Light Up Your Holiday

Light Up Your Holiday

Have you heard of "Holiday Sweater" Envy? I hadn't until recently when I was approached by a complete stranger while grocery shopping.  Apparently, she was envious of my light up snowman sweater.
This week at ASP, students had the opportunity to learn about electrical circuitry.
Using this knowledge and Weartec supplies, they will light up their holiday by creating light up holiday apparel.  This is an ongoing project.  Students may continue to work on their creation at ASP until Tuesday.  Any unfinished items will be sent home for students complete.

National Youth Science Day, October 4th

National Youth
Science Day

On Wednesday, October 4th, five students from CMS participated in National Youth Science Day by joining 19 other schools across Nebraska via zoom conference.  The students and leaders were given the challenge of designing a device that would track heart rate and movement of the person or animal on which it was attached.
One highlight from the two and a half hour activity was when the five students were able to finally connect the microchip and heart rate monitor to the computer using Bluetooth.  They all jumped up and celebrated.
"It was a struggle and very hard working with a boy, but I had fun!" remarked one student.  "Time just seemed to fly by."

This activity was sponsored by the UNL 4H Extension.  The students who participated will now be able to teach this to their peers at the Afterschool Program.

Students Who Attend Afterschool Programs.....

Students Who Attend After School Programs.....

"Attending afterschool programs can improve students' academic performance.  A national evaluation found that over 40 percent of students attending 21st Century Community Learning Center Programs improved their reading and math grades and that those who attended more regularly were more likely to make gains.  Students who attended afterschool programs have also shown that they benefit socially and have a higher school day attendance rate." (Naftzer et. al, 2007)

After school programming will begin on Tuesday, August 22nd.  The Middle school Program begins at 3:25and wraps up at 6:00 pm.  Programming days are Monday through Thursday.   We also offer academic assistance on early out Fridays.  Besides having the option of a nutritious snack, students are given the choice of which activities they are going to participate in.  The main focus of the program can be summed up by thinking S.T.E.A.M. This stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, ACADEMICS and Math.  5th- 8th grades students are invited to attend daily or whenever their schedule allows.  7th and 8th grade students who are out for extracurricular activities are welcome to join in programming after they finish their practices.  This gives them the opportunity to eat a snack and finish up any homework they might have.  Coaches can and will let students back in the building for this purpose.

Let us know how we can help your child reach their goals!!

Frozen Bubbles In -6 F

Frozen bubbles at CMSASP.   What else could you do when it is this cold?
Each bubbles begins to instantly freeze.  Some bubbles last up to 30 seconds!
When they burst, They look like falling snow.
I suggest you give this a try.  It is not a typical winter activity.
