This week, CMS ASP students made winter snowflakes out of toilet paper rolls! See below for photos and instructions.

                       Glitter Snowflakes
Supplies:
  •  White and Blue (washable) Paint
  • Toilet Paper Rolls
  • Glitter
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • Buttons
  • String
Step 1: Squish your toilet paper roll in half and cut small strips with your scissors

Step 2: Paint the pieces of your snowflake (inside and out) with the white paint and sprinkle with glitter (or roll it in the glitter). Allow to dry.

Step 3: You can either staple the strips into a snowflake shape, or you can glue them. If you glue them, make sure they have plenty of time to dry.

Step 4: Add bling (buttons, etc.) to the center and tie a ribbon to hang it from.

NASA Experiments

Last week some Chadron State College Students visited out program and led our students in four activities: building earthquake-proof structures, making chemical reactions, building a model of the layers of the earth, and building a model of the layers of the ocean. Funding for the visit came from a NASA grant aimed at helping elementary education students feel more comfortable teaching science. Thanks so much for a great visit everyone!

Haiku Straw Paintings

During this week's after school art lesson, students wrote a haiku poem and made a straw painting to go with it. Check out some of their poems and paintings below:

Grass swaying in the wind
like an ocean on the big prairie,
Grasshoppers on the prairie.

Tigers are awesome.
Tigers have many black stripes.
I have seen tigers.

Leaves fall from the tree
Swirling from the tree

Book Club Biscuits

Book Club members are currently reading The Magic Thief by Sarah Prineas. It follows the story of Conn, a young boy drawn into a life of wizardry and adventure. In addition to reading the novel, Book Club members also cook snacks related to the text and have guest visitors. Today they made Benet's Biscuits, which was recipe from one of the character's in the book (see recipe below), and they were really delicious!
